Using Independence Blue Cross for Therapy in Philadelphia (Out-of-Network)

Turning Leaf Therapy is not in-network with Independence Blue Cross, including its Keystone Health Plan East product, but many IBX PPO members with out-of-network benefits are reimbursed 50 to 80 percent of the allowed amount per session after their out-of-network deductible. We provide a superbill after every session on request, which you submit for reimbursement, typically paid within two to four weeks.

Why this page exists

Independence Blue Cross covers 55 percent of Philadelphia County's insured population, nearly triple the next-largest carrier (Mark Farrah Associates, County Health Coverage data as of June 30, 2024). If you have IBX, you are not alone, and you still have options here.

How superbill reimbursement works

Three steps. First, you pay the session fee ($130 to $200, depending on the clinician) at time of service. Second, we provide a superbill, a detailed receipt with your diagnosis, the service provided, and CPT codes (90834 or 90837). Third, you submit it to IBX through your member portal; if your plan includes out-of-network benefits, reimbursement typically arrives within two to four weeks.

Check whether your IBX plan reimburses

Call the number on your card and ask: Do I have out-of-network outpatient mental health benefits? What is my out-of-network deductible, and how much is met? What percentage of the allowed amount is reimbursed? Is there a session limit? Where do I submit superbills? Note: Keystone Health Plan East is an HMO and generally has no out-of-network benefits.

Other ways to make it work

HSA and FSA cards are accepted and can pay for sessions with pre-tax dollars. A limited number of reduced-fee spots exist for financial hardship. And if reimbursement matters more than fit, we will say so plainly: an in-network IBX practice may serve you better, though few offer this depth of specialty care.

Frequently asked questions

Does Turning Leaf accept Independence Blue Cross?

No. We are out-of-network with IBX and Keystone Health Plan East. IBX PPO members with out-of-network benefits can submit our superbills for partial reimbursement.

How much will IBX reimburse for therapy?

Many IBX PPO plans reimburse 50 to 80 percent of the allowed amount per session after the out-of-network deductible. Call IBX to confirm your plan's specifics.

Why are you not in-network with IBX?

Staying out-of-network with some carriers is what lets us keep longer sessions, careful matching, and depth-oriented work sustainable. We offset it with superbills after every session on request and in-network access to Aetna, BCBS plans, United, and Optum.

What is a superbill?

A superbill is a detailed receipt that includes your diagnosis, the service provided, and CPT codes, which you submit to your insurer for out-of-network reimbursement.
