Blue Cross Blue Shield Therapy in Philadelphia

Turning Leaf Therapy is in-network with the Blue Cross Blue Shield family for individual therapy in Old City Philadelphia and via telehealth across Pennsylvania, including Highmark, Horizon BCBSNJ, Capital, Anthem, Empire, and the Federal Employee Program. Most BCBS members pay a $15 to $50 copay per session after their deductible. The one exception is Independence Blue Cross, explained below.

How coverage works with BCBS

We accept Blue Cross Blue Shield plans across the family: Highmark, Horizon BCBSNJ, Capital Blue Cross, Anthem, Empire, the Federal Employee Program, and standard BCBS plans. Members from other states are seen through the BlueCard program. No referral is required for outpatient therapy, and telehealth is covered at parity for Pennsylvania residents.

What you will typically pay

A copay is a flat fee per session, typically $15 to $50 with BCBS, after your deductible is met. Some plans use coinsurance instead, a percentage of the session cost. Your deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket each year before your plan begins paying; many plans waive it for outpatient mental health. One call to BCBS member services settles which applies to you.

The one exception: Independence Blue Cross

Independence Blue Cross (IBX), Philadelphia's local Blue plan, is the exception: we are out-of-network with IBX and its Keystone Health Plan East product. If your card says Independence Blue Cross, our Independence Blue Cross guide explains how superbill reimbursement works and what your options are.

Verify your benefits

Call the number on your BCBS card and ask: Do I have outpatient mental health benefits? What is my copay or coinsurance? What is my deductible, and how much is met? Is there a session limit? Do I need a referral?

What we treat with BCBS coverage

Anxiety

Blue Cross Blue Shield covers anxiety treatment as ordinary outpatient behavioral health, including generalized worry, panic attacks, social anxiety, and health anxiety. In anxiety therapy at Turning Leaf, clinicians treat the symptom as information: what your nervous system learned to expect, and why it still braces. That is slower than a worksheet and considerably more durable.

Depression

Depression, dysthymia, and the depleted numbness that follows long stretches of stress are covered under Blue Cross Blue Shield. Depression therapy here is depth-oriented and relational, which means the sessions attend to the history and relationships that keep generating the low mood, not only to the mood itself.

Trauma and PTSD

PTSD and complex PTSD are covered Blue Cross Blue Shield outpatient conditions, including trauma that began in childhood. Our trauma-informed care begins with stabilization rather than with the story, and clinicians integrate EMDR, IFS, and body-based work where they fit the person in front of them.

Grief and loss

Grief after a death, a stillbirth, a suicide, or an estrangement is covered under Blue Cross Blue Shield as outpatient behavioral health. Grief work here holds two layers at once: the loss in front of you, and the older losses it tends to reopen, which is often why a grief response feels larger than the event.

Life transitions

Adjustment difficulty around a move, a divorce, a diagnosis, a new baby, or a retirement is a covered Blue Cross Blue Shield concern. Life transitions therapy gives the in-between period somewhere to go, so the disorientation becomes something you can think about rather than something you have to outrun.

Relationships

Attachment patterns, chronic conflict, people-pleasing, and the difficulty of trusting after betrayal are covered under Blue Cross Blue Shield. Our individual relationship therapy works on your side of the dynamic, which is the part you can actually change, and it does not require a partner to participate.
